Jump Starting a Luxury or European Car Safely

If you drive a BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Range Rover, Lexus, or any recent vehicle with a lot of electronics, a careless jump start can cost you far more than the tow. Here is what actually matters.

Why modern cars are different

A car built in 1995 had a battery, a starter, and an alternator. A car built recently has dozens of control modules running everything from the transmission to the seats. Those modules are sensitive to voltage spikes, and a bad jump can damage them.

The expensive failures are not the battery. They are the control modules that a voltage surge takes out along the way.

What goes wrong with a careless jump

• Cable jumping from another running engine. The donor car's alternator can push unregulated voltage into your electronics
• Reversed polarity. Even a second of backwards connection can take out modules and fuses
• Tow truck clamps. Heavy commercial units are built for trucks, not for a car full of computers
• Jumping at the battery when the manufacturer specifies a remote terminal. Many European cars put the battery in the trunk or under a seat and provide a designated jump point under the hood for a reason
