Chassis Battery vs. House Battery

Most motorhomes have two separate battery systems. The chassis battery starts the engine. The house batteries run the lights, fridge, water pump and outlets in the coach. When the engine will not crank, it is almost always the chassis battery, and that is what we jump.

Many RVs have a boost or battery-link switch on the dash that borrows power from the house batteries to start the engine. If your house batteries are charged, try holding that switch while you crank before you call. If they are dead too, call us.

Why RV Batteries Die

  • Storage: Months parked in a lot while the radio, CO detector and step motor slowly drain the chassis battery.
  • Snowbird season: Coaches that sat all summer and will not start when it is time to head out.
  • Parasitic draws: Clocks, alarms and leveling systems pulling current around the clock.
  • Florida heat: South Florida summers cut battery life to 2–3 years.

FAQs

Q: How much is an RV jump start?

A: A flat $100 anywhere in our area, for any motorhome on a 12V chassis system, any hour.

Q: Do you jump travel trailers or fifth wheels?

A: Those do not have an engine, so there is nothing to start. If the truck pulling it will not start, we can jump the truck. Pickups are our standard $70 rate.

Q: Can you charge my house batteries?

A: No, a jump is for starting the engine. Once it is running, your alternator and converter will start recharging the system.

Q: My diesel pusher will not start. Can you help?

A: Most diesel pushers use a 12V chassis system and we can usually help. Tell us the make and model when you call and we will confirm before heading out.

How Our Price Compares

Many truck road service companies in South Florida charge a $100–$240 service call, then add labor or mileage on top. A simple jump can end up costing $150–$400.

We charge a flat $100 for semis, box trucks, dump trucks, buses and RVs, service call included, anywhere we serve, truck stops included. No labor clock, no night or weekend surcharge. Fleets pay $90 per jump after their third each month. Pickup trucks and work vans, gas or diesel, are $70.
